What unique challenges do you encounter when designing custom cabinetry for irregularly shaped or historically older Ottawa homes?
The unique challenges we face stem from an ever-growing shift in conventional living to a more conservative approach to how space is optimized. We have noticed our clients buy into the ‘tiny home’ idea and are looking for custom work that optimizes a small space. This means designing and building cabinetry that is functional across all areas of living while also being aesthetically pleasing. A dining room can be a kitchen and living room with the right approach to custom cabinetry and hardware.
How has design software evolved to help clients better visualize complex custom cabinetry solutions before installation?
We are able to make quick changes on the fly where it calls for it. Most people are visual thinkers and need a 3D model of what their product is going to look like. Using our design software, we are able to accurately draw up plans and demonstrate what the colour is going to be, what the hardware is, and where items are going to be placed. It eliminates all guesswork and reassures the client of the agreed-upon plan to tackle the project.

Can you walk us through your material selection process? What criteria do you use to recommend specific wood types, finishes, and hardware for different spaces like kitchens versus closets?
Material types can essentially be divided into three categories:
1) Thermofoil/Polymer
Thermofoil is a cost-effective option that still allows you to achieve a high-end outcome. Too much heat exposure can make Thermofoil doors peel because the glue attaching it to the vinyl can melt.
2) Lacquered MDF
Allows the client to select any solid colour and have it finished in lacquer which allows for a water-resistant seal on your kitchen. It is significantly more durable than the Thermofoil option and lasts a lot longer.
3) Hardwood
Hardwood is always a gorgeous and long-lasting choice.

What are the most innovative storage solutions you’ve developed for clients with unique spatial constraints or specialized organizational needs?
Fanan Custom Cabinetry creates innovative storage solutions, including pull-out pantries, custom corner cabinets, hidden compartments, and built-in multi-purpose units. We also design vertical shoe storage, custom drawer inserts, and overhead cabinetry with hydraulic lifts, blending functionality and style to optimize space and meet specialized needs.
How do you balance aesthetic design with functional ergonomics when creating custom cabinetry, especially in kitchen and bathroom spaces?
While we consider standard sizes we typically develop a client portfolio that includes their height, the appliances they use, as well as aesthetic taste. It allows us to design a concept whereby the client can easily store, reach, and grab items based on how they live their lives, what their intention for the space is, and their comfort when moving around the room.

Describe a particularly challenging custom millwork project and how your team solved complex design or installation issues.
A challenging custom millwork project is a walk-in closet where the client requested items that did not fit the space as it was small and awkward. Our solution was to control the means of production and build the specification in-house to the exact measurements.
What trends are you seeing in Ottawa for custom cabinetry that reflect changing homeowner preferences in 2024-2025?
A re-emergence of solid colours like turquoise green and moving away from the modern look like white high gloss cabinets. Stained solid wood cabinets are totally in!
What technical considerations are crucial when integrating custom cabinetry with modern smart home technologies?
Building in outlets or figuring out the electrical components like wire placements in lighting features.

How do you collaborate with other trades like electricians and plumbers to ensure seamless integration of custom cabinetry in renovation projects?
We are more than ready to take on projects in-house! We have a preinstall team that prepares the job site so all of the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and countertops are prepared prior to cabinet installation. We take care of our clients A to Z.
What quality control measures does Fanan Custom Cabinetry implement to ensure long-term durability and customer satisfaction?
Fanan Custom Cabinetry ensures long-term durability and customer satisfaction by controlling the means of production and installing all of our projects in-house, utilizing meticulous material selection, precision craftspersonship, and rigorous quality inspections. We tailor designs to client needs, use eco-friendly and durable finishes, and prioritize professional installation. Can you explain the differences in design approach between residential and commercial millwork projects?
Residential millwork focuses on personalized aesthetics, comfort, and harmony with a home’s style, using materials like hardwoods and custom finishes. In contrast, commercial millwork emphasizes durability, functionality, and brand alignment, utilizing cost-effective and resilient materials suitable for high-traffic environments.
How do you help clients make informed decisions about cabinet materials that balance budget, durability, and aesthetic preferences?
We are capable of pricing out material selections as well as an extensive hardware list to make sure we are able to meet our clients’ budgetary expectations. All of these details are given out as a part of our estimate package so that clients can see what is available to them.

What advanced techniques do you use to maximize storage efficiency in small or challenging spaces like closets and kitchen layouts?
Our advanced knowledge in hardware selection and superior design practices make it so that our team is more than capable of handling demanding projects that demand ingenious approaches to how custom cabinets are built.
